Deluge! The 1968 Great Flood and reducing flood risk today

Lewisham is London borough of culture 2022. 54 years ago much of the borough was hit by the Great Flood of 1968.
Join QWAG’s July meeting for amazing pictures and fascinating recollections gathered from people across the borough – from central Lewisham, Ladywell and Catford, to Downham, Lee Green, and Grove Park.
All of this is part of Lewisham Under Water QWAG’s project with Lewisham Council for In Living Memory, Goldsmiths’ University of London’s post WWII people’s history of life in Lewisham borough.
The threat of flooding hasn’t gone away. If anything, flood risk is rising as climate change continues to be talked about but not acted on, as green spaces are lost to development, and as hard surfacing replaces more front gardens across the borough.
Ahead of September’s flood anniversary you can:
- Add your recollections, pictures, diary entries to Goldsmiths’ In Living Memory page
- Ask your family and friends if they recall the fllod and if they wish to contribute recollections
- Help produce Deluge!, a special Brockley Beer to mark the flood anniversary, by finding and contributing any hops growing locally in a back garden, alley or underused space.
