The Artist – Stephen Chaplin
Stephen was born in Greenwich in 1934. While he was young he lived in Bromley, Kent, and a tributary of the River Ravensbourne ran through his parents’ garden.
He attended St. Dunstan’s College in Catford, then studied at the Slade School of Art in London. He taught art history at Leeds University from 1966 to 1990. He then returned to London and worked as an Archivist at the Slade School of Art.
Stephen has worked widely on projects with hospitals and local authority art galleries. He presently has an exhibition of paintings at Lewisham Hospital where he has drawn scenes from the route of his father’s walk to school from near Loampit Hill to Catford Bridge.
Stephen has kept a diary of his paintings since the 1970s and has been drawing since early childhood.
His paintings and sketches have been described by some people as “magic realism”.
