Community Eels Project Officer, Thames21

Eels are amazing, but they face immense struggles.

Since the 1980s European eels (Anguilla anguilla) have declined by over 90 per cent. A main threat eels face is man-made physical obstacles in rivers.

Having migrated over 3,000 miles to London from the Sargasso Sea the last thing eels need is to hit barriers to their spawning grounds.

The good news is that eels have been seen again in the River Quaggy and the River Ravensbourne suggesting that the actions to remove hard barriers are starting to work.

Join us for our AGM and find out from Thames21’s Eels project officer how the ObstacEELS citizen science project is making life better for eels by identifying and removing barriers to their migration.
